Presentation about liquid democracy at Manipal University
Between 2016-2017 I worked as Assistant Professor of European Studies at Manipal University. It feels fantastic, positive, and joyful to be back at my former university and meet my former colleagues at the Manipal Center for European Studies. I have been feeling nostalgic about India for a long time, and as the pandemic is getting over, I finally had the chance to travel again.
Compared to my recent presentation at Chitkara University, my presentation in Manipal focused less on tech aspects such as blockchain and cryptocurrencies and focusing more on theories and ideas regarding liquid democracy and how it could be implemented within the existing systems for parliamentary, representative, and direct democracy regarding general elections and local referendums. I received several questions, including questions about how liquid democracy could be applied within India concerning different problems and challenges such as corruption, poverty, and gender inequality.
I was also extra happy to meet all of the current students who showed a lot of interest in my presenting topics. I told the students that they are among the first people globally who are now more familiar with ideas and theories about liquid democracy, which is still an unknown idea in media and academia. We also discussed the idea of organizing a festival of democracy in India based on the Almedalen-Week in Gotland, Sweden.
